WALTAIR DIVISION OF EAST COAST RAILWAY CELEBRATES 76TH REPUBLIC DAY WITH ENTHUSIASM*

The 76th Republic Day was celebrated with great patron at the Waltair Division of East Coast Railway. Shri Manoj Kumar Sahoo, Divisional Railway Manager, unfurled the National Flag and took the Rashtriya Salami, which was presented by the contingents of the Railway Protection Force, Civil Defence, and Bharat Scouts & Guides at the Waltair Railway Football Stadium.

Following the spirited Republic Day parade, DRM Shri Manoj Kumar Sahoo extended his Republic Day greetings to all and recalled the significance of the Indian Constitution and the noble ideals of our freedom fighters. In his address, DRM highlighted the remarkable growth trajectory of the Waltair Division, crediting the relentless efforts of the staff. He emphasized the importance of constructive work, team spirit, positive thinking, and commitment, noting that the division is progressing steadily and is set to become a role model for other divisions.

DRM Shri Manoj Kumar Sahoo also shared key achievements of the Division during last financial and current year, stating that the division had reached an all-time high in both loading and revenue. The division achieved a loading of 76.48 million tonnes (MT) and earned a revenue of Rs. 10,268 crores, surpassing the previous records of 69.63 MT in loading and Rs. 9,304 crores in revenue. He acknowledged the collective efforts of the employees, noting significant milestones such as the highest-ever non-fare revenue earnings of Rs. 8.12 crores and the highest-ever scrap sales realization of Rs. 161.53 crores through scrap disposal.

Despite numerous challenges, the Waltair Division has consistently performed well and set new records. DRM Shri Manoj Kumar Sahoo also outlined major infrastructure developments, including the addition of 69 kilometers of doubling and third lineworks and the conversion of the aging mechanical lever frames to electrical interlocking systems at the Waltair Marshaling Yard. The division has also replaced seven older Electronic Interlocking systems to strengthen the signaling network. In terms of freight traffic, the division has hauled 1,366 long-haul freight trains so far as compared over last year’s total of 1,162 long hauls.

Furthermore, DRM highlighted the division’s commitment to sustainability with the generation of 1.73 million units of solar energy from rooftop solar plants, resulting in savings of Rs. 64.81 lakh on the electricity bill this year. For enhancing passenger train mobility, 200 kilometers of track have been upgraded to allow speeds of 130 km/h, and 100 kilometers of track have been upgraded to allow speeds of 110 km/h.

In terms of passenger services, the Waltair Division has introduced three additional Vande Bharat Express trains—Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam-Bhubaneswar, and Visakhapatnam-Durg. Additionally, 39 general class coaches have been added to Visakhapatnam-originating trains to accommodate more passengers. The division has also catered to the demand for special trains during festivals and pilgrimages, running a total of 526 special trains this year compared to 474 in the previous year.

To further enhance the festive spirit, artists from the Waltair Divisional Cultural Association presented vibrant cultural performances and patriotic songs. The Railway Protection Force performed showcased thrilling and daring bike stunts.

In recognition of the successful organization of Republic Day events, DRM announced cash awards for various departments. Chief Administrative Officer / Construction Shri Shri Ankush Gupta, ADRM (Infrastructure) Shri E. Santaram, Senior Divisional Personnel Officer Shri Jusuf Kabir Ansari was also present at the occasion.

In a heart-warming gesture, President of East Coast Railway Women’s Welfare Organization (ECoRWWO), Smt. Madhusmita Sahoo, along with Secretary and Executive Members, distributed health drinks and fruits to about 100 patients.

A large number of officers, staff, their families, media representatives, and members of recognized unions attended the Republic Day celebrations.
