Imphal: 25th February : : Voluntarily surrendered illegally held weapons, ammunition and war like stores to Assam Rifles during a period of 12 hours wef 6 PM on 24 Feb 2025 to 6 AM on 25 Feb 2025 at a designated and safe location on Vietum Khullen – Khoken village track in Kangpokpi district. Following the appeal made by the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Assam Rifles took proactive measures by organising a series of meetings with local Community leaders and Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) in their Area of Responsibility (AOR). These engagements were aimed at educating and encouraging locals to surrender their firearms and any illegally held weapons during the amnesty period. Meeting concluded with selection of a safe and secluded place assigned for the locals to drop their illegally held weapons during a period of 12 hours.
Locals came forward in support of the efforts made by Assam Rifles and voluntarily surrendered one AK- 47 Rifle with two magazines, one .303 Rifle, one Smith & Wesson Revolver, one .22 Pistol with mag, one single barrel rifle, three Improvised Mortars, two country made pull mechanism rifles, nine mortar bombs, fifty 7.62mm live ammunition, twenty 7.62mm blank ammmuniton, one Motorola handset (Biofeng made), one No. 36 hand Grenade, twenty four anti- riot rubber bullets, two bullet proof plates and two tube launchers. Assam Rifles in coordination with Manipur Police collected the surrendered weapons and handed over to police.
This initiative is seen as a crucial move to begin the process of de-weaponizing society in Manipur, ultimately fostering a sense of security among the people and enabling regular activities to resume, helping to build trust and stability in the region. The decision made by locals placing their trust in both the Assam Rifles and the Government of Manipur, signifies a collective shift towards reconciliation and an acknowledgement that the path to peace requires co-operation between Government, military, and local communities.
