Imphal, 12 October : : “The Garden Care” organized a training session on advanced Field Pea cultivation practices under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), an initiative by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur. Held at Moidangpok, the event was chaired by Shri K. Debadutta Sharma, Director of Horticulture & Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur. The session focused on equipping farmers with modern techniques to boost sustainability and revitalize the agricultural economy.
In his address, Shri Sharma detailed essential cultivation practices for Field Pea, covering topics like quality seed selection, land preparation, timely sowing, and effective irrigation management. He emphasized the use of organic fertilizers such as compost and vermicompost to enhance soil fertility, along with eco-friendly pest and disease management methods. He also provided guidance on spacing, weeding, mulching, and harvesting techniques to maximize crop yields, stressing that adopting these methods would not only improve efficiency but also reduce costs and increase profits.
Shri Sharma further explained the setup of cost-effective vermicomposting units using locally available resources, encouraging farmers to embrace this sustainable practice for organic waste management. He also highlighted the Farmer Economy Revival and Livelihood Generation Programme, led by the Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), assuring farmers of ongoing support through local organizations, expert training, and government-backed resources. The Director confirmed the provision of essential equipment like water pumps and drip irrigation systems to improve productivity and stressed the importance of securing better market access for fair pricing of produce.
The training received enthusiastic participation, with farmers eager to adopt the improved practices and vermicomposting to enhance production, sustainability, and livelihoods.
