The Indian Journalists Union has strongly condemned the shocking eviction of the office of United News of India in New Delhi by the Delhi Police, terming it a grave attack on press freedom and the institutional integrity of one of India’s oldest news agencies.
In a statement issued today, IJU Secretary General Vinod Kohli said that the manner in which the UNI office was vacated raises serious concerns about the growing intolerance towards independent media institutions. “Such coercive action against a reputed news agency without due sensitivity to its role in the democratic framework is deeply disturbing. It sends a chilling message to the entire media fraternity,” he stated.
IJU President Geetartha Pathak also expressed strong disapproval of the incident, stating that the eviction reflects an alarming trend of undermining journalistic institutions. “The UNI has been a pillar of credible journalism in India for decades. Forcing it out in this manner is not just an administrative act, but an assault on the spirit of free and independent journalism,” he said.
The IJU has demanded an immediate intervention by the concerned authorities to ensure that the functioning of UNI is restored without further hindrance and that such incidents are not repeated in the future. The Union also called upon media organizations across the country to stand united against any attempt to stifle press freedom.
The IJU reiterated that a free press is fundamental to democracy and any action that weakens it must be unequivocally opposed.
